Japanese camera-maker Nikon plans to boost its total workforce in Thailand by about 2,000 to some 7,000 employees. The increase stems from Nikon moving its digital-camera production operations to Thailand.

Nikon’s new factory in Ayutthaya is expected to export about 2.4 million digital cameras and lenses this year to markets including Europe and Japan. The factory is the first digital-camera plant Nikon has positioned outside Japan. It is the largest plant outside Japan, and is also the only single site producing both cameras and lenses.

Nikon Corp executive chairman Saiijiro Yoshida said the new factory would produce the D70 digital SLR cameras, one of Nikon’s latest products. The factory will also produce standard interchangeable lenses for the D70, he said.

In 2003, Nikon Thailand exported about 500,000 cameras. This year exports should increase to 1.2 million units. Lens exports are also expected to total 1.2 million units this year, tripling last year’s figures, the executive chairman said.
